Climate Change – What You Can Do

A few suggestions from TIME’S UP!:

Leave your car at home Use a bike or public transport to go to work and make local trips.

Participate in community gardening Engage the environment from the roots up.
Find gardens in your local area and contact the gardeners.
Plant trees, fruits, vegetables and even flowers.

Make your home energy efficient You can reduce your energy expenditures simply by developing energy saving habits:

  • Showers require less hot water than baths.
  • Install simple water-saving shower heads.
  • Use washers, dryers or ovens during the cooler hours of the morning or evening.
  • Wash only full loads of clothes when possible and clean your dryer’s lint filter after every load.
  • Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs put out about 4x as many lumens per watt and last about ten times as long!
  • In summer, keep drapes closed on the sunny side of the house. In winter, open them on sunny days.
  • Close all drapes, blinds or shades at night in winter to make use of their insulating properties.
  • Use an exhaust fan to pull excess heat and humidity out of the kitchen and bathroom in the summer.
  • Set thermostats at 68° F in the winter and 78° F in the summer.
