Seeking to crack down on a group of cyclists who take over city streets every month, the NYPD held a public hearing yesterday on a proposal to require groups of 30 people or more to get permits allowing them to gather.

The cyclists, known as Critical Mass, have consistently refused to apply for permits, insisting that they don’t need them as long as they obey traffic rules.

The NYPD also wants to require groups of 10 or more to get permits if they’re found to have broken traffic laws.

Critics say the proposed rule would be too open to interpretation and, therefore, dangerous.

The NYPD does not need approval from the Mayor’s Office or City Council to change the rule.
